Abstract

This study aims to characterize smallholder farmer households and identify the types of feed provided by farmers in integrated sugarcane cattle farming. The study was conducted in the Mardikismo farmer group (n=25) in Gucialit District, Lumajang Regency. Data were obtained from individual interviews using questionnaires followed by direct observation. The results showed that the occupation of the head of the household was dominated by work related to agriculture. In addition, most farmers raise Limousin and Simmental cattle with an average of three per household. Sugarcane shoots are the main source of feed, followed by corn straw, rice straw, elephant grass, and other greens. Although sugarcane-based feed is widely used, there are several challenges, such as dull, rough, and stiff fur, high service per conception rates, delayed sexual maturity in heifers, and hard feces texture. Despite these problems, sugarcane by-products are an important source of feed in the area due to their availability and cost-effectiveness.
